Hidden by the roadside and so close to our wonderful hotel Malika, we ate there for the first time. We were able to enjoy a fantastic coffee and vegetarian dishes while hiding and enjoying the beautiful view of Samarkand from the window of our hotel.
Most of the food we had in Uzbekistan was delicious, but we were surprised at how many vegetarian dishes they had on the menu. While Tashkent had a few vegetarian options that were not conventional, we found that Bukhara had many of them and the service was fantastic. Many restaurants understand the concept of vegetarianism and many of their menus have at least one vegetarian option on their menu, and they are plentiful and easy to read. We came here because Lonely Planet recommended it as a great place to get a coffee (most places serve tea, not coffee). The service is fantastic and common in Uzbekistan; in the capital it is as good or better than in many other cities and even better in Samarkand.

Located in the centre of Samarkand, this restaurant offers Uzbek, Russian and European cuisine and a well-coordinated and fast service. I like the interior in the Central Asian Renaissance style, which resembles the palace from 1001 Nights.

If you are a foodie who wants to travel to a corner of the world that is not doomed to death to enjoy phenomenal cuisine, Uzbekistan should be your next stop. If you are looking for a good place to visit Qabuli, the capital of Samarkand and the largest city in the country, this is probably the best place you will head for. Both Gruzinski and Dvorik offer numerous Georgian dishes, but note that the prices for Uzbekistan are quite expensive, but worth it nonetheless. Daredzhani, another Georgian restaurant, offers vegan options, and this one has a wide selection of vegetarian options as well as a variety of different dishes.

The National Food is located in the heart of Tashkent, just a few blocks from the city centre. I heard from a friend who travelled to far-away Kyrgyzstan for a yurt that most of the food is meat. Traditional Georgian food is served bedridden, meaning that the main course is mainly meat, but as you can find in most Georgian places, there is a lot on the vegetarian side.
So I imagine it is similar to Kazakhstan, but in a more remote area you could end up eating meat. It's golden in the city, and you can definitely spot it at Samarkand Foods.
